EMC Directive

Selling products throughout the world requires a thorough understanding of individual country requirements. In Europe, the requirements of the European Union have been harmonized into one set of standards that apply differently depending upon the type of product being sold. The European requirement for Electromagnetic Compatibility is known as the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive. The former Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive, 89/336/EEC, was replaced on July 20, 2007 with the new Directive 2004/108/EC.

The Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive applies to all electrical and electronic appliances together with equipment and installations containing electrical and/or electronic components, that are liable to cause electromagnetic disturbance, or the performance of which is liable to be affected by such disturbances.

The Directive applies to a wide range of equipment encompassing, as broadly as possible, all electrical appliances, equipment and installations, energy distribution and transportation, telecommunications networks, and more.

To demonstrate compliance to the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive, the CE Marking must be affixed to the product, which allows the free movement of goods throughout the European Union.
